What are Collocations? 

 تعني المتلازمات اللفظية، و هي تتكون من كلمتين أو أكثر مثل أشباه الجمل 

يستخدمها المتحدثون الأصليون بصيغة و هيئة محددة، ولا يمكن أن تتغير 

:مثل

  • Go home 

Why are collocations important? 

لأنه يساعد على التحدث بطلاقة و بشكل طبيعي و صحيح مثل المتحدثين الأصليين 

يوجد في لغتنا العربية الكثير من المتلازمات اللفظية مثل؛ برد قارس ، ذكاء حاد، خطأ فادح ، أبيض ناصع

Types of Collocations: 

  1. Verb + noun: ( noun phrase) 
  • Make tea
  • Eat soup 
  • Make money = Earn money 

She’s working hard to earn money. 

  • Run a business = Manage a business 

Bill ran his business very well, and he made a lot of money. 

  • Do your best 
  1. Adj. + noun :
  • A fast car 
  • Heavy smoker

He’s usually a heavy smoker and drinker. 

  • Nasty surprise = unpleasant surprise 

Don’t say “ bad surprise” 

Say “ Nasty surprise” 

Anyone who wants a cheap ride could get a nasty surprise. 

  • Strong coffee / strong tea
  • Strong feeling 

There was a strong feeling of fellowship among the members of the team. 

Don’t say powerful coffee / tea / feeling. 

  • Powerful man 
  • Economical car / vehicle 

Can you suggest a choice of economical cars / vehicles for us? 

  • Economic problems 

Nowadays, economic problems plague the world. 

  1. Adv + adj:
  •  Utterly stupid. 

He looked utterly stupid. 

  • Richly decorated 
  • Highly gifted = highly talented 

Anwar was a highly gifted and interesting personality. 

  • Newly appointed 

As newly appointed leader, I totally take care of it.

  • Crucially important = extremely important 
  • Absolutely / extremely fascinating 
  1. Noun + preposition + noun:
  • A bunch of flowers 💐 

I have a bunch of flowers for you

  • A bunch of keys 
  • A bar of chocolate 
  • A bar of soap 
  • A phase of life
  • A stage of life 

Childhood is a stage / phase of life. 

  • A surge of anger 

In a surge of anger, Adnan hurled the cheese against the wall. 

  • Vigor of emotions
